Alter—
— The Journal of Alternative Design Practice
A collection of books on “Alter-Realities” published during the second edition of the Porto Design Biennale to address new perspectives on matters of production, care, livelihood and landscapes. The project is still active, with new issues launched in 2024.
The Alter— series was conceptualized according to the curatorial programme developed by Alastair Fuad-Luke for the 2021 edition of Porto Design Biennale, with guest editors for each issue.
Released during the Biennale, the collection is dedicated to the thematic axes of the event: #1 Alter—Realities: Towards Justice Through Design; #2 Alter-Livelihoods: Experiments With Infrastructures for Community Economies; #3 Alter-Production: Shaping Together a Common Ground; #4 Alter-Scapes: The Practice of Controversy; #5 Alter-Care: Care is What We Actually Do.
Designed by the Collective 1234, the journals feature guest editors and thinkers to create fresh and diverse approaches to the themes of the Biennale. Presented at the Porto Book Fair in 2021, the project is still active, with new issues #6 Alter-Resistances: Liberation as a Project and #7 Alter-Citizenship: The Act of Inhabiting the City launched in 2024.
